Watch Yourself

I am one of the few people I know who wears an analog watch (or a watch at all, for that matter). I love my watch. I think of it as a piece of jewelry as well as a useful tool, and when I put it on, I always feel like it pulls an outfit together.

... but my watch offers me another benefit that is truly priceless: an opportunity not to look at my phone. Think about it: you’re having drinks with a friend, you go to check the time on your phone...suddenly you’re both scrolling through Instagram and not talking to each other. Or, you go to google a question and 30 minutes later realize you’ve lost 30 minutes down a google headlines rabbit hole. It happens that quickly and you have to be careful.

I love technology- I love social media and phones and convenience. But I worry that we are losing something when we automate everything. There is nothing I hate more than sharing time with someone who is glued to their phone.

Next time you need to quickly check the time, try doing just that: click the time on, check it, and put the phone back down. Or better yet, simply glance at your wrist.
