Themed Food

I love themed foods- the kind of foods you only eat at certain places or on certain occasions. There’s something about these foods that instantly transports you to a place and a feeling. Recently I’ve had some moments like this that ranged from delicious to strange:

  • While at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Brent and I tried Butterbeer. The word “butterbeer” instantly transports me to nights curled up reading the new Harry Potter installments as fast as I could, completely enraptured by every word. When I was 10, my school librarian handed me the first book and suggested I try it out. I handed it back to her, appalled, and told her “I don’t like books about boys.” She pushed it gently back towards me and said “give it a try...there’s a character in here that reminds me of you.” This would prove to be one of the greatest compliments of my life, as I can only assume she meant Professor Snape (kidding! I’m nowhere near selfless enough to be a Snape).

Cut to years later, as Brent and I sat down to lunch in the Three Broomsticks and took deep draughts of our butterbeers...and reader...I did not like it. It was WAY too sweet for me, with notes of butterscotch, vanilla, and toffee. BUT a childhood dream was fulfilled, and that will always be delicious.

  • I recently had the opportunity to attend a baseball game. I haven’t been to the ballpark in years- it was fun! The crowd was into it, the weather was perfect, and the bathrooms were close by, which makes it all the more enjoyable (I am 1 million years old). This is one of the rare places where I will eat buttered popcorn and Cracker Jack. I hate kettle corn with a passion, but combine it with buttered popcorn, the smell of hotdogs, and the crack of a bat, and for some reason I am all in.

  • This is a trend I am behind on, but I am catching up. Did you know they have full bars in movie theaters now?? On a recent trip to the movies (to see Crazy Rich Asians- highly recommend!) I made this discovery, and it has changed my world. And while liquor might not be a “theme” food for me, it certainly makes the previews that much more tolerable.
