The Gift of the Handwritten Note

Notes for all occasions!

Getting a card or letter in the mailbox is still one of my greatest pleasures. I believe it is called “snail-mail” nowadays because it is so slow. Yes, I get it. It is certainly slower than an email or a text message shouting “Happy Birthday” at me complete with dancing minions and confetti. The emojis are cute but I still like a good-old-fashioned-snail-mailed-card-or-letter.

To me, it is kind of like the last great surprise. You walk to your mailbox expecting some junk to recycle, maybe a bill or two, and you find - SURPRISE - a card or a letter that someone took the time to pick out, write a note, seal, put a stamp on it, and mail. I like it! I like the sending and I like the receiving! Both are equally fun to me!

I love stationery!

I love the different kinds of paper and the way each one feels luxurious in my hands. I love the beautiful colors. I love the lined envelopes. I love hearing from friends far and near at Christmas when they send picture cards covered in glitter. I love a note for no reason other than to say ‘hello.’ It’s just so kind!

Even if technology is quicker and easier there is a lot of fun to be had in taking the time to send a paper card or letter. It’s like a gift that comes in an envelope! Such fun!

I’ve found wonderful stationery companies online that sell cards for all occasions: the procurement of a pet or the loss of a pet, starting or ending a job, getting married or finding a new partner, buying or selling a house, etc., etc., seems like there is something for everyone! You can buy recycled paper cards (my favorite), singing cards, dancing cards, gigantic sized cards, and tiny cards. Cards in any language. It is all available!

Now you might be thinking, ‘that’s great but cards have gotten kind of expensive’ and I agree with you. I used to buy my mother a birthday gift with a five dollar bill from my father, now a card costs more than that ... but so does everything else. I can’t get a candy bar for a nickel anymore either! And a card, or a letter, means so much, especially now when we are all inundated with mind numbing electronic mail.

Something I’ve found that is helpful is to stock-up on cards. After Christmas I often buy my cards for the next year and when I find a cute card on sale I buy it and stow it away for when the next birthday rolls around. Usually, I just buy cards and stationery as I need them because I want each one to be special. It is funny how much people appreciate the time and thought that is necessary to send a card or letter.

So, get back to it! Send a card, send a letter, send a bit of joy to someone just because! You’ll both be glad you did!!

I must say, Sarah and Angela, you two both tend to write the most incredible and heartfelt notes! It is like Jen said ... a hug in your mailbox! I am going to challenge myself and mail someone a note every week for the rest of the year!

You are absolutely right about snail mail. I love getting a card or a thank you in the mail. It really is a bright spot in my day. It's like a hug in your mailbox!I have a complete love for good quality stationery. I totally agree that cards have gotten crazy expensive but, if you look you can find great cards that don't cost a small fortune. I like to stock up on cards when I come across them in my wanderings.
