Is there anything more satisfying than a warm, soft pretzel, covered in yellow mustard? Not to me! Rather than making a trip to the mall where the pretzels live, I’ve recently learned that you can make them at home using grocery store bought pizza dough! Impress your friends and skip the mall by making them yourself.
1 store bought pizza dough (mine comes from the Publix deli)
Baking soda, about ½ cup
Skillet filled with water
Cookie sheet covered with parchment paper
Kosher salt, or other chunky salt
Preheat the office to 450 degrees.
Cut the dough ball into about 8 pieces to make the traditional pretzel shape. You can also make pretzel sticks or whatever shape you prefer.
Roll each piece of dough into a long rope about 18 inches long. Shape into a pretzel and set on the parchment lined cookie sheet.
Bring the skillet of water to just below boiling, more of a really hot simmer. Add the baking soda.
Carefully put 2 or 3 of the pretzels into the water, using a slotted spoon or a spider, for 30 seconds. Remove them to the parchment paper while you do the same with the remaining pretzels.
Once all the pretzels have been through the water bath, salt them, then bake them until golden brown about 15 minutes.
We’re traditionalists in our home and like to eat them warm with yellow mustard but you can eat them as you like, with cheese sauce, spicy mustard, or chocolate. Another variation is to sprinkle the wet pretzels with a cinnamon and sugar mixture, or use ‘everything salt.’ Make them spicy with cayenne or chili powder - the choice is yours!
