Several years ago when I heard that Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara were on a new show called Schitt’s Creek I couldn’t wait to get home and find it, watch it, then buy it for posterity. These two wonderful actors have made many award winning movies separately but together they are sensational. Their film Best in Show (2000) stands the test of time and still makes me laugh 19 years later … but I think I’d watch them in anything because they have such a delightful onscreen chemistry.
In 2015 their latest adventure, Schitt’s Creek, quietly showed up on Amazon. Not only does it feature Levy and O’Hara but it also includes Daniel Levy (son in real life and on screen), Sarah Levy (daughter in real life), Chris Elliott, Annie Murphy, Emily Hampshire and a town filled with the most delightful cast of characters on any television program. I wish to live in Schitt’s Creek and get to know these wonderful, hilarious, and wacky people.
Simply put, it is a show about a family who are down on their luck after their business manager steals all their money. This formerly wealthy family is now living and trying to survive in Schitt’s Creek, a town the dad bought years before as a joke. This premise sounds simple enough yet the show is far more interesting and relevant than a family trying to make ends meet. Ultimately, it is a show about the importance of family connections, loving one another through all things, and making a life of meaning.
I’ve watched and re-watched it so many times and am still not tired of it. Each re-watching is a new adventure and I continue to laugh myself silly all over again! Some shows start to look tired and worn out after a season or two but not this one. Each season is fresh and new with bright ideas and thought provoking episodes to ponder. It is just lovely.
Unfortunately, like all good things, it is coming to an end in 2020 for a sixth and final season. It will be missed but thankfully there’s always dvds, Amazon, Hulu, etc.
We will be watching the final season with our own version of the Cafe Tropical and enjoying cinnamon buns and vodka.
