When I travel, I love to bring home a taste of wherever I’ve been. I am particularly fond of vinegars and olive oils, jams, and salsas. You’d be surprised how easy it is to find these things once you start looking for them; most visitors centers or small boutiques carry something along these lines.
On our honeymoon in Charleston, Brent and I picked up several oils and vinegars from a shop called Low Country Olive Oil. These ranged from oils to cook with to oils to drizzle on breads and everything in between.
In Pensacola, there is an adorable shop downtown called The Bodacious Olive that features a wide variety of cooking products from ingredients to tools. I visited this shop with my aunts and uncles while we attended a festival in the downtown area. They encourage sampling at the Bodacious Olive, so be sure you’re hungry when you visit!
Thomasville is rather famous for a line of jams, syrups, preserves and salsas called Blackberry Patch (they were even selected as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things!). You can find Blackberry Patch in just about every store in our tourist-driven downtown.
Locally sourced items like this are the perfect welcome gift for your out-of-town guests. They help capture a memory of being somewhere. Every time I pick up one of these food items while I am cooking, I am momentarily transported to that trip, the moment the item was purchased, the smell of the store. It’s almost like bottling a moment to slow down.
