Restaurant Reviews: Husk

For our honeymoon, we chose Charleston, SC. It was fabulous- the weather was nice, the hotel was insane (if you’re ever in Charleston, stay at the Planters Inn), and we ate like there was no tomorrow.

One of the highlights of the trip for both of us was our dinner at Husk, Sean Brock’s place. Husk was within walking distance of our hotel, so we strolled over early to enjoy a pre-dinner drink.

The first thing that struck me about Husk was its appearance: it looks just like an old southern home, complete with a front porch. There was warm light pouring through the windows and we could hear the familiar clanging of forks and glassware from inside.

The bar is across a small walkway from the main restaurant. It is teeny tiny and packed with character. Brent enjoyed talking to the bartenders about music and skateboarding; I enjoyed the creative cocktails that highlighted odd ingredients like black peppercorns (with some gin and cucumber, thank you very much!).

When it was time for dinner, we walked across the walkway into the inviting cream colored house and were taken to a table on the second floor. The floors are busted into sections with warm wall colors and working fireplaces...it feels more like taking a seat in someone’s very spacious living room than a traditional restaurant.

Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and laid back. When I asked him for a wine recommendation, his response was priceless: “Well, that depends...are you one of those people who needs to drink what they think goes with something, or are you one of those people who actually likes to enjoy their wine?” Enjoys their wine, please and thank you.

Handmade yeast rolls with bacon fat butter are brought to the table. (If you are wondering if these were good, please re-read the ingredients list.)

Look how sweet- they wrote Congratulations at the top of the menu for us!

First course: Brent- pork belly with charred broccoli and kimchi- savory umami with

Sarah- beef tartare: OMG these sweet potato curly crunchy bits really set it off- the creaminess of the beef, the zing of the mustard...heaven

Table: skillet cornbread with bacon crumble: I don’t love cornbread, but this made me a believer. Perfect mix of sweet and salty.

Main course: Brent- chicken and potato dumplings, butter beans, broccoli, pesto, aged cheese, and preserved lemon: I mean...it’s chicken and dumplings on crack in the best of ways. The sauce was green with pesto and tangy with garlic and cheese. A delicious and modern take on a classic dish.

Sarah- cornmeal crusted catfish with roasted cauliflower and romesco, sour garlic, preserved tomato, shrimp broth: Low-country at its finest. The fish somehow remained crispy floating in the broth (I know, it’s magic). The shrimp broth had a depth of flavor that is hard to describe- it was salty and fishy while being delicate at the same time.

Table: fingerling potatoes with leeks and arugula covered in a bleu cheese fondue. Bleu cheese fondue, people.

Dessert: lemon tart. We took this home with us and it held up- luscious lemon with just the right amount of sugar in a crispy tart shell.

5 stars- would HIGHLY recommend!
