Restaurant Review: Last Resort Grill

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Athens, GA on a work trip. The trip was focused on downtown businesses: how to make sure they thrive, ways to support local entrepreneurs...some really cool stuff. While I was there, I ate at Last Resort Grill.

LRG is in the heart of downtown Athens. It’s fun and funky on the outside with cute outdoor tables that lead you inside. The restaurant is tightly packed which adds to the atmosphere of community the owners have worked hard to maintain. Once inside, you are greeted by an over-the-top pastry case and full bar (that would be enough right there, but spoiler alert: the food is good, too!).

Don’t let the white table clothes fool you- while the spot is upscale enough for a nice night out, it’s not pretentious and you’ll be fine in nice jeans.

I ordered the pork special: a French cut pork chop served over zucchini and roasted sweet potatoes, topped with pickled tomatoes, cotija cheese, and a salsa verde that was to die for. The pork chop was cooked wonderfully, but the real star of the show were the vegetables. They were lovingly cooked and delicately spiced to perfection.

Each entree is served with a starter salad. These types of salads are usually disappointing to me, but the homemade Vidalia-bacon vinaigrette and freshness of the lettuces made this small plate shine.

I took a piece of NY style cheesecake to-go with me after the meal and was not disappointed (the slice was big enough to share but I won’t tell if you won’t).

I ate early, so there wasn’t a wait, but the small space fills up quickly, so I would encourage you to make a reservation to be sure you get in.

If you’re ever in downtown Athens, make it a point to eat at the Last Resort Grill!
