Christmas movies are my go-to’s for bad days: nothing can cheer me up quite like a Christmas movie. They’re also my go-to for good days...so maybe it’s just better to say, I really love Christmas movies.
Here are a few of my favorites:
The Santa Claus(e)- This is a Tim Allen Disney movie from the early 1990s and I love it. It’s funny and poignant (there’s a divorced couple attempting to co-parent their son, so it’s also fairly progressive for the time) and includes the very quote-able line: “Just because you haven’t seen it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.”
Holiday Inn- An oldie but a goodie! This black-and-white beauty tells the story of innkeeps who only open during holidays. It’s a feel good musical.
When Harry Met Sally- In addition to being my all time favorite movie, this one also packs a New Year’s Eve punch that gets me every time.
A Christmas Story- The very definition of a classic. I could watch Ralphie come down the stairs in that bunny costume a million times and never get tired of it. The real magic here is how this movie balances sweet and silly, happy and sad. I find myself identifying with different characters depending on the year. A total delight.
Elf- Will Ferrell knocked it out of the park with this new classic. Buddy the Elf’s enthusiasm and unwavering optimism always makes me smile. SANTA!!!!
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation- If you’ve never seen this one, do yourself a favor and watch it this year (also, where have you been?!?).
