Felting

Felting is a super fun, super easy craft that I truly believe anyone can do. I am not crafty in the slightest, but I enjoy felting very much (and I feel like I succeed at it, which is essential to good crafting in my book).

2 years ago, my office participated in a public art event that required each officemate to create a felted creature. I was horrified at the prospect...but I picked up my felting kit and quickly realized that this is something I can do!

Felting requires:

  • Felting needle- this notched needle pulls the fabric strands until they are firmly intertwined. (Pro-tip: these aren’t sharp per se but they hurt a lot if you slip, so pay close attention to your project)

  • Felting block- this is a foam block that you can stick your project on so you don’t ruin, say, a pillow while you’re felting.

  • Wool felt

I started felting from a pre-made kit that included a block, needles, felt, and a pattern. It was as easy as following the instructions on the packet! No hidden tricks, no secret skills needed. Simple start needle-ing your project and a little while later, you have a completed piece.

Felting is the perfect pastime for listening to podcasts, watching tv, or passing long car trips (as a passenger of course!). Pictured below is a gnome I made in 2 hours the other night. I hope you’ll try your hand at something creative- felting or otherwise. It is soothing to create something with your own hands.
