Conferences

View of ATL from my hotel

Do you ever go to conferences for work? It’s a double edged sword I think: on the one hand, it’s always nice to get out of town and I feel very lucky to be chosen to represent my office at these events. On the other hand, it takes you away from your family and routine, and you’re “on” a lot at these events.

I recently returned from a conference in Atlanta. I love visiting Atlanta- it’s a vibrant and exciting city filled with things to see, do, and eat.

This trip, I was lucky enough to attend a luncheon where Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel was the guest speaker. I’ve never given much thought to Mr. Cantore (other than panicking when he showed up in my town last year during hurricane season!), but reader, he was a delightful speaker.

Jim Cantore!

He shared a very sweet story about how his father inspired him to go after his (delightfully nerdy) dream of being a weather guy and shared his craziest reporting experiences. He’s the first to admit that he’s not perfect (cough cough) but his passion for what he does is truly contagious.

Conference chicken: the meal at every conference ;)

It really got me thinking about what I feel passionately about. Travel, food, writing...all these things came to mind. But I also feel strongly about creating a home space I feel good about, and reading great books, and learning new things. I think our passions change and grow with us as we get older, and a very lucky few find that their passion and their work align.

What are you passionate about? Is it your work? Your hobby? Something else entirely? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
