Chocolate Drop Cookies (Crinkle Cookies)

Chocolate cookies are one of life’s greatest pleasures. I could absolutely eat my weight in cookies and be a happy camper.

A holiday favorite!

These are called Chocolate Drop Cookies, but I have heard them referred to as crackle cookies and crinkle cookies, among other things. Usually served at Christmas time, I suggest busting these bad boys out more often...they’re simply too good to pass up!

This version is deeply chocolatey, thanks to the addition of chocolate chips. If you’re looking for a little less punch, you can skip the chips and they will still be delicious. Or, if you’re feeling crazy, add chopped nuts to these cookies for a truly special twist!

You will need:

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • Pinch of salt (a hefty pinch)

  • Powdered sugar for dipping (maybe a few tablespoons? You don’t need a ton)

  • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips (you can you milk, white, dark...whatever you like)

*This dough needs about 4-6 hours to set up in the fridge after it comes together, so plan accordingly.*

Dough ready to go!

Mix together cocoa powder, sugar, and oil until smooth. Beat in eggs one by one and add vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and chocolate chips. Slowly whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a dough forms. Cover and chill for 4-6 hours. This is a VERY sticky dough.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using an ice cream scoop, evenly scoop out cookie dough and drop onto a baking sheet (you can make these more uniform by rolling them between your hands first, but this is a very messy dough and the cookies taste just as good dropped right on the tray!). Using a sifter (or just your hands), dust the cookies with powdered sugar.

Bake for 17-25 minutes, depending on the size of the cookies. These bake to a brownie-like consistency, so they will seem a bit soft when they come out of the oven but will harden as they cool. Test them for doneness the same way you would a cake- use a toothpick. If it comes out clean, the cookies are done.

Voila! Tasty treats any time of year! These cookies are perfect on their own, or jazz them up and make them into ice cream sandwiches.
