We recently took a wonderful bread baking class at our local Publix (my Christmas gift from my beautiful daughter :-) and it was just a delight! We learned lots, laughed lots, and ate lots! When we got home I tried my hand at this delicious bread. Here’s the recipe so you can make it too!
2 cups of flour, plus a smidge more for kneading
1 .25 ounce package of active dry yeast
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 tablespoon of fresh chopped rosemary
¾ teaspoon of garlic salt
½ cup of milk
½ cup + 2 tablespoons of water
4 tablespoons of butter
5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
1 cup of grated parmesan cheese
1 large beaten egg
Combine the following in a mixer bowl: ¾ cup of the flour, yeast, sugar, rosemary, ½ teaspoon of salt. Mix until blended.
In a microwavable bowl add the following: ½ cup of milk, ½ cup of water, 2 tablespoons of the butter. Warm at 20-second intervals until it reaches a temperature of 120-130 degrees. (If it gets too hot just sit it on the counter to cool.)
Add the milk mixture to the flour and beat for 2 minutes at medium speed scraping the bowl, as needed. Add ¼ cup of flour and beat for 2 minutes. Stir in the remaining flour ¼ cup at a time.
Add the garlic and cheese and beat for 3 minutes.
Move the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-6 minutes or until it is smooth. If it is too dry, wet your hands and continue kneading.
Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope about 15 inches long.
Lay the 3 ropes next to each other on a parchment-lined sheet tray, pinch one end together, braid the three pieces.
Cover the braided dough and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
Brush the loaf all over with the beaten egg.
Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown. You can test for doneness with a kitchen thermometer. Fully cooked bread should register 190 degrees.
Melt two tablespoons of butter, brush cooked loaf, sprinkle on the garlic salt.
Cool about 10 minutes before slicing.
Enjoy!
