Book Reviews: Blackfish City

I recently finished Blackfish City by Sam J. Miller while on vacation. I have always enjoyed fantasy novels but don’t have a ton of experience with sci-fi. This book opened up a brand new genre for me. Not only is it one of the best sci-fi novels I have ever read, it is also one of the most entertaining adventure stories I have had the pleasure of reading in quite some time.

Set in a post-global-warming future, civilization is spread between giant floating cities, each with their own unique cultures and customs. A series of different narrators tells the story of how their city came to be- its ups and downs, disparities and triumphs. Throughout the novel, we come to learn that these narrators are all connected in unlikely and exciting ways.

The story culminates in a rescue mission that was both cinematic and fun to read. The end of this book left me wanting more.

If you think science fiction isn’t for you, I would urge you to give Blackfish City a try. You might just find yourself swept up in a world not so different from ours.
