Book Review: Where the Crawdads Sing

Where the Crawdads Sing is Delia Owens’ first novel- and what a debut it is!

This book was written in such a vivid way that I felt like I was on the marsh in coastal North Carolina the whole time. Owens is an accomplished naturalist and researcher herself, making the main character’s interest in biology and natural landscapes a fitting piece of character development.

Where the Crawdads Sing is lots of things: it’s a coming of age story, a look at poverty in the rural south, a question about what makes a family, a murder mystery, a story about love. It is hard to categorize because it makes you feel a wide range of emotions and gives you plenty to think about long after the last page.

This book is frightening without being scary. No one ever jumps out from the bushes or goes bump in the night...it’s worse than that. The community actively turns away from Kya and her family, knowing full well that they need help. Despite the neglect, Kya grows into an intelligent, strong, capable woman who- no matter how vehemently she denies it- is still open to trust after so many have hurt her.

I highly recommend Where the Crawdads Sing. It is a fast-paced read with a twist that will keep you thinking of the marsh long after you have left it.
