Book Review: The Current

I recently read The Current by Tim Johnston. It was recommended to me by my local bookseller, who also enjoys fictional thrillers. I really liked this book!

The Current is about the same incident 10 years apart. A decade ago, a young woman was pulled from the frozen river that runs through the town. 10 years later, another young woman is pulled from the river, but she survives. This sparks a chain of investigations, revelations, and intrigue that I don’t want to spoil for you...but I will say, I found the ending very satisfying, without being too “perfect with a bow on top.”

I liked the style in which this book was written. It felt both organized and stream of consciousness, with dialogue happening rather infrequently (I usually prefer dialogue, but this story spent a lot of very necessary time inside the characters heads). The author painted a vivid picture of the town that was rocked by the accidents (crimes?) and did a great job writing from a female perspective.

If you’re looking for a quick read that is more than meets the eye, I would highly recommend The Current. Happy reading!
