Book Review: Ruthless Tide

If you’re anything like me, your first thought upon seeing this cover is “Al Roker? Like...the weather guy?” ...and the answer is yes, exactly like the weather guy. Not only is he a famous weather forecaster, he’s also a talented writer (some people get it all ;)

Ruthless Tide chronicles the Johnstown flood disaster from the late 1880s. This is not an event I was familiar with before reading this book, which is incredible because this flood still ranks as one of the greatest “natural” disasters in all of America’s history. I say “natural” because the dam that burst and released the floodwaters was a mash-up of human ingenuity and greed.

The book shares the stories of flood survivors and the aftermath of the event on the now lost towns. It also dives deep into the events and people that created the problem in the first place- and the names of many of these wealthy titans will be familiar to you.

If you’re not sure about non-fiction or history reads in general, Ruthless Tide is a great place to start. The writing is accessible and the tale is so compelling that you’ll want to turn the page and find out more.
