Book Review: One Day

One Day by Gene Weingarten

One Day by Gene Weingarten is a non-fiction that reads like a novel. It is incredibly well written and completely held my attention from page one (no easy feat!).

The story goes that Gene and his buddy decided to pull a random date out of a hat and write about it. This would be a unique challenge to look at the world in a new way and tell its story. Gene hoped for a monumental day- maybe the date of a landmark election or other historic event- but instead he was stuck with December 28, 1986. This date was particularly dreaded because news the week between Christmas and New Year’s is notoriously slow. But Gene made the best of it and began his research.

What he found were compelling stories of life, death, love, loss, and everything in between. Thinking that any one day could be unremarkable was a mistake- as it turns out, there is something of the extraordinary in every ordinary day.

One Day is written in a short story format that begins at midnight on December 28th and goes nearly hour by hour through the day, visiting incredible stories from all over the United States. The book is easy to pick up and put down as you have time, while still creating one whole picture.

I highly recommend One Day by Gene Weingarten. If you read it, let me know what you think!
