Book Review: Daisy Jones & The Six

Daisy Jones & The Six is a novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid that I devoured in about 1 day. It tells the story of a fictional band in the 1970s and their rise to fame (and ultimate implosion). The story is told as an oral history, going back and forth between bandmates as if they were all in casual conversation with the reader.

At first I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this writing style, but it ended up being compulsively readable and very fun. By the end of the novel, I felt like I had been chatting with the characters. The dialogue style still brings out the nuances of each band member's personality and I really enjoyed it.

The story is told chronologically with some foreshadowing shared by the characters along the way. We understand fairly quickly that the band was the biggest music sensation of the moment and their disbanding was big news. Discovering what happened along the way is so much of the fun of this story.

Ultimately uplifting (albeit a tiny bit heartbreaking), this is a fast-paced read that’s perfect for the beach!
