Birthdays are very special and important to me. I love celebrating someone’s birthday! From the cards to the cake, the presents to good wishes, everything about birthdays makes me happy.
Many people have said that I only feel this way because I am young, but I don’t think that’s it. I see birthdays as a triumph: You did it! One more whole year! Incredible! We don’t all get hundreds of years and birthdays to go with them, and I feel we should celebrate the ones we do get lucky enough to see.
My birthday is just 4 days before Christmas. To answer your question, yes, people often try to combine my birthday and Christmas. Almost no one is thinking of birthday supplies and celebrations this time of year, for understandable reasons.
Growing up, my parents always made a big effort to differentiate my birthday from the holidays. They would go out of their way to make sure the gift wrap was birthday themed (not Christmas!) and the cake and decor were not red and green. These days, my husband is on the bandwagon too and works hard to set the day apart and make it feel special. I feel very lucky in this regard.
The next time your birthday or the birthday of someone you love rolls around, be sure to celebrate it in style. It’s a wonderful time to remind your loved one why you’re happy they were born and how much better the world is with them in it. And besides,, who doesn’t like an excuse for cake??
