Five years ago, Brent and I adopted a German Shepherd that we named Atticus. Brent grew up with German Shepherds and is a big fan of the breed; I was a little hesitant but quickly fell in love the the photos of Atticus as a puppy. We brought him home when he was still teeny tiny. (He was so tiny, in fact, that I was terrified I would step on him.)
The family we got Atti from was very kind and obviously loved him very much. It was tough taking him away from his 12 brothers and sisters. Poor buddy fell asleep in Brent’s arms as soon as we hit the road to bring him to his new home... I think he was exhausted with the day’s commotion.
Atti’s ears and paws grew much faster than the rest of him...his “tween” stage was awkward and adorable. He would tilt his ears to the side when he was curious about something. My dad said he didn’t run- he galloped. Atticus started getting bigger by the day.
I grew up with a dog, but had never raised one up from a puppy on my own before. I was surprised at how much work it was- potty training and crate training, leash training and play time. German Shepherds need a lot of interaction and mental stimulation. They’re very smart and loyal (which means they can tell when you’re leaving for work and they always want to come with you).
Cut to 5 years later: Atticus is now 115 pounds of muscle and fur. He is gorgeous. He’s easily one of the best parts of my day. Have you ever been greeted by a big dog at the end of a long day at work? It is, quite simply, the best.
Atticus fit into our family like he was always meant to be there. He is kind and careful and funny (yes, a dog can be funny!). He loves us fiercely and takes his job as a watchdog very seriously. He loves belly rubs and ear scratches and will chase the Kong for two days straight if you let him.
Big dogs (and German Shepherds in general) get a tough rap, but I am here to tell you that you will be hard pressed to find a more loving and stalwart companion.
Puppies and dogs really are the best kind of people! I do love Mr. Atticus and the elusive Ms. Lola!
That was certainly a great way to kick off a Tuesday! Nothing better than multiple pictures of puppies:) I love big dogs too. I completely agree with you that coming home to my dog is the best part of my day. Loved the picture of Brent in the robe also!
